I have a niece!  She was born late in the evening two nights ago on the 6th of August, to my brother and his wife.  She topped out at eight whole pounds and nineteen inches long!  She made her poor mother endure almost twenty-four hours of labor, and when she came out, her face was all swollen.  Her huge cheeks made her look like a little bitty old lady queen Victoria.  The swelling is going down now, and we're finally getting to see what she looks like.

And of course, I'm stuck at my doctor's in California, so I don't get to meet her until Sunday. Until then, I am relying on the pictures my sister-in-law has been sending us.  My favorite one is of her mama holding her, and she's yawning.  I love her little yawn.

Anyway, if you can't tell, I'm smitten.

She's my first niece (sort of, my cousins' kids call me aunt too) but I already have seven year old twin nephews from the same brother. I get to see her tomorrow night, I'm so excited!

Whee! I remeber when my cousins started to get kids (oldest is omigad neaarly seven) and I was just so enthralled... When one of my cousins came to our cottage this summer with his wife and two year old son it was amazing...

I just start floating around in this "It's an adorable widdle baby!" haze whenever my siblings and cousins have kids. And I can't stand my cousins, just their kids.

<When the first of my cousins got a baby and I got to heóld her first time, my first, clear thought was: "Maybe I ciyld have one myself." Before her the last birth in the family had been my little brother who us four years younger than me and I hadn't had practically any contact with babies.

I thought I was going to be that woman who was never good with kids, because I was all bookish, and lived in my head, and couldn't stand other people, and I'm the youngest by ten years, and then I had nephews, and I was like "these are awesome little creatures", and then later, I started babysitting and teaching little kids Torah school, and I was like "goddamn, I like them. I really like them. They're so smart with everything they're learning, all at once! And I'm not screwing them up, somehow!"

So yeah, I didn't have any real contact with babies either until recently.

I first read the first sentence as "I have a nice!"

Which fits too. :)

Love, C.

Mazel Tov! Nieces are nice indeed, babies generally are very cool when one can hand them back during crankytimes.

And she's particularly short on crankytimes as it is since her mother is taking opiate based pain meds following a particularly long hard labor, so my niece is a little dopey. (This was done with the advice and observation of their doctor who knew she was breastfeeding, and it stopped this morning. Let's see how calm she is now!)
